■ SOMALIA: Government assumes control of its airspace from CACAS as Somaliland bans all UN flights in retaliation.

Somalia's Minister for Information, Abdullahi Elmoge Hersi, says his government has once more resumed control of its national airspace after twenty years following a handing over ceremony held at Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) who collectively form the Civil Aviation Caretaker Authority for Somalia (CACAS).

►► ZAMBIA: Proflight Zambia to start Lubumbashi, Lilongwe ops from mid May.

► SOUTH AFRICA: SAA to finally take delivery of its long deferred A320 order beginning Q3.

SAA logoSouth African Airways (SA) will at last, begin taking delivery of twenty Airbus A320s in the next quarter (i.e.. July - September), South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, has said. The order has been repeatedly deferred owing to SAA's ongoing financial woes.

► CONGO (KINSHASA): Turkish Airlines revealed as potential partner for new Congolese national carrier.

Turkish AirlinesTurkish Airlines (TK) has been revealed as the potential partner the Congolese government has approached apropos the setting up of a renewed national carrier to replace the semi-defunct LAC Lignes Aériennes Congolaises (4V).

■ NIGERIA: Princess Stella officially unveils Nigeria's revised National Civil Aviation Policy.

NigeriaThe Nigerian Minister of Civil Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, has officially unveiled her country's revised dossier on aviation dubbed "the Revised National Civil Aviation Policy 2013" (NCAP) needed, for what it terms, to bring new and sustainable regulatory structures into the industry for the safety and security of airline passengers and crew.

■ ZIMBABWE: Five candidates shortlisted for Air Zimbabwe CEO position; appointment due before month's end.

■ MOROCCO: Government now mulling possible Gulf carrier tie-up for Royal Air Maroc prior to a privatization bid.

► ANGOLA: Lufthansa switches Luanda to A330 ops from late October.

German carrier, Lufthansa (LH), will, from 27OCT13, switch its operational aircraft in use between  Frankfurt and Luanda from Airbus A340-300 aircraft to A330-300. Capacity remains unchanged despite the aircraft adjustment.

■ MALAWI: United Arab Emirates, Malawi to finalize BASA in coming months.

Malawi and the United Arab Emirates are set to sign a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) in the coming weeks following a visit to the Southern African country by an Emirati delegation led by Mr. Khalid Ghanim Al Ghaith, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for Economic Affairs from the10th to 11th May, 2013.

► NIGERIA: Allied Air Cargo to replace B727Fs with B737-400Fs.

(AEI), to provide two firm B737-400SF 11 Pallet Configuration conversions, with an option for one additional conversion. The first aircraft is a high gross weight B737-400 (MSN 26081) built in 1993 and will undergo freighter modification in June 2013 at AEI’s Authorized Conversion Centre in Jacksonville, Florida.

■ MOZAMBIQUE: Brazil set to ratify new bill to enable resumption of flights to Mozambique.

Brazil and Mozambique could soon resume direct flights should Brazilian president, Dilma Youseff, consent to a bill already passed by the Brazilian Committee on Foreign Relations and the National Defense of Congress regarding the establishment of commercial flights between the South American country and Mozambique. 

■ SWAZILAND: SWACAA signs deal in which the ATNS will provide ATC services at Matsapha Airport among others.

The Air  Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) Company of South Africa and the Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will result in better harmonised continental  airspace, thereby  improving the smoothness and  cost-efficiency of the entire air traffic service chain between the two countries.  

► CANADA: Shell Oil awards CHC Canada chopper contract for sub-Saharan African oil rig ops.

Shell International LOGOShell International Exploration and Production B.V. has selected CHC Helicopter, a Canadian offshore helicopter services provider, for a five-year, multi-million dollar contract to support Shell's deep-water exploration activities off the coast of Sub-Saharan Africa.

► BRAZIL: Arik Air hoping to start Lagos - São Paulo flights "before August."

Arik AirNigeria's largest carrier, Arik Air (W3), has formally launched negotiations with the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil - ANAC) regarding traffic rights and landing slots for São Paulo, it has emerged.

■ EGYPT: New BASA signed with Morocco as a revised one with Turkey still pending says EHCAAN boss.

The North African countries of Morocco and Egypt on May 5 finalized a renewed Bilateral Air Servcies Agreement which will see frequencies between the countries doubled from the previous seven, to fourteen weekly for each country's respective designated carrier(s). According to the head of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN), Engineer Magdy Abd El-Hady Hafez, the revised BASA also allows for Egyptair (MS) to serve other cities outside of Casablanca, including the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

► MOROCCO: Royal Air Maroc outlines its planned E190 Summer routes.

► UNITED KINGDOM: SAA to introduce the A340-600 on Heathrow flights from August.

SAA logoSouth African Airways (SA), from 01AUG13, is to increase capacity on it's Johannesburg – London Heathrow route, with 1 of its 2 daily flights scheduled to be operated by Airbus A340-600 aircraft on a daily basis.

► ZIMBABWE: fastjet rumoured to be starting Victoria Falls flights from June.

fastjetUK-based Tanzanian LCC, fastjet (FN), is reportedly to commence regional operations to the Zimbabwean resort town of Victoria Falls starting June 4, Swiss aviation newswire ch-aviation reports.

■ SOUTH AFRICA: ACSA outlines plans for aerotropolis at Bloemfontein's Bram Fischer International Airport.

Hot on the heels of its larger northern neighbour, Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport and its aerotropolis/aerocity plans, Bloemfontein's Bram Fischer International Airport is now set to launch its own bid for an aerocity.

► RWANDA: Air Burundi eyes Kigali flights from June 1; further regional expansion into Southern Africa to follow.

► SIERRA LEONE: Allied Air Cargo begins once weekly Ostend to Freetown via Lagos flights.

■ NIGERIA: ECOWAS considering setting up an MRO facility in West Africa.

■ CAPE VERDE ISLANDS: ASA to spend €17million in 2013/14 to upgrade country's airports.

■ KENYA: Kenya Airways, Kenya Tourism Board sign joint marketing deal.

Kenya AirwaysKenya Airways (KQ), and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) have entered into a one-year joint marketing programme to boost tourist arrivals. Under the deal, the Kenyan national carrier will bankroll the KTB to the tune of USD240'000 (KSH20million)  while in return, the KTB will ensure KQ brand visibility at its tourism promotion forums as they seek to increase the number of tourists visiting Kenya.

► EGYPT: Qatar Airways boosts its Cairo frequencies to 16 weekly.

Qatar Airways (QR) has been operating an increased weekly service between Doha and the Egyptian capital, Cairo, since late-April 2013, where it now offers 16 weekly flights instead of 14. Extra flights operate on Thursdays and Saturdays from Doha.

► TANZANIA: British Airways to only resume Dar es Salaam flights once market is conducive.

British Airways (BA) could make a return to Dar es Salaam once market conditions are conducive, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Julian Chandler, has said. British Airways pulled its three times weekly service to the Tanzanian capital on March 31.

■■SÃO TOMÉ & PRÍNCIPE: Wise guy who made joke about bomb on an STP Airways flight to Lisbon to appear in court.

The man, Manuel Ferreira, was travelling with his wife on STP Airways (8F) flight 8F508 from São Tomé International Airport to Lisbon earlier this week when he made the remarks.

► SOUTH SUDAN: South Supreme Airlines now looking to add 737s to its fleet.

► CONGO (KINSHASA): CAA A320 suffers mass tyre blow out on take off roll at Kisangani; no injuries.

A CAA - Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation (FPY) Airbus A320-200 (MSN ? | "9Q-CAA") operating as flight FPY-343 on May 1 with 130 passengers and 6 crew onboard blew all four main gear tyres prior to commencing its take off roll from Kisangani en-route to Kinshasa. 

■ CANADA: Nigerian ExIm Bank, Export Development Canada discussing possible short term financing for Nigerian aviation sector.

The Nigerian Export Import Bank, NEXIM, and Export Development Canada (EDC), Canada's export credit agency, are exploring the prospects of a partnership to provide short term financing to Nigeria's aviation sector.

► TANZANIA: Tanganyika Flying Co. & Safarilink announce codeshare deal.

■ NIGERIA: NAMA plans full area radar coverage by month's end.

► UNITED STATES: Five ex-Royal Air Maroc B737-500s sold on to Vx Capital Partners.

ACMI specialists, Airstream International Group, have announced the onward placement of five former Royal Air Maroc (AT) Boeing 737-500s by Vx Capital Partners, a US based private investment firm.

► SOMALIA: Air Uganda eyeing Mogadishu flights with third CRJ200.

The newly appointed CEO of Air Uganda (U7), Cornwell Muleya, has set forth a bold new initiative by saying his company plans to use it's recently acquired Bombardier CRJ200 (MCN 7363 | 5X-UGH) to commence direct flights between Entebbe and the Somali capital, Mogadishu, later this year.

■ CONGO (KINSHASA): Brussels Airlines boss reaffirms company's commitment to Korongo.

■ BOTSWANA: Qatar, Botswana ink a Bilateral Air Services Agreement.

The respective civil aviation authorities of Qatar and Botswana have concluded a Bilateral Air Services Agreement following a signing ceremony held in Doha recently. The ratification of the BASA comes after the deal was originally initialled by both states back in 2007.
 

► INDIA: Ethiopian delays resumption of its 787 Mumbai flights until mid June.

■ KENYA: Jetlink Express faces liquidation as FineJet takes it to court over $1.2million in unpaid fuel bills.

► NIGER: Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet crashes during reconnaisance mission near Niamey; 2 dead.

Chaibou Massalatchi, the head of Niamey’s airport, said the plane had taken off on the morning of Monday, May 6, for a reconnaissance mission into the north-west of Niger when it came down.

► SOUTH AFRICA: fastjet to wet lease a 737-300 from Star Air while A319s are certified.
