Speaking at a press conference called in Blantyre yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer of the Malawian Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC), Mr Jimmy Lipunga, said the deal was now done, with Ethiopian Airlines holding a 49% stake while 31% would be open to Malawian investors with Government holding the rest (20%).
Mr Lipunga further added that USD20million would be injected into the new company to capitalise it while Ethiopian Airlines would introduce two aircraft. He said the new deal means the national flag carrier will be back on local, regional and international routes though still remains to be seen.
Malawian Minister of Transport and Public Works, Sidik Mia, recently stated that with a few modalities to be sorted out, the rejuvenated carrier should have been airborne as of June 30.
