South African Airways (SA) has expressed interest in commencing flights to Lima, Peru according to Carlos Canales, the head of Peru's National Chamber of Tourism (Cámara Nacional de Turismo del Perú - CANATUR).
Announcing that Turkish Airlines (TK) would be starting Lima flights in May 2014, Mr Canales said various carriers had been attracted to Peru, among them SAA, Qatar Airways (QR) and Emirates (EK), owing to its tourism potential and strategic location in the region.
South African Airways currently serves Buenos Aires and São Paulo as its sole South American routes.
While SAA has made no formal announcement of planned flights to Lima, the South African flag carrier did apply to the South African Department of Transport for rights to commence a once weekly Lima flight, albeit under a codeshare, in January this year.
Further to that is speculation of an anticipated codeshare announcement with Brazil's TAM Linhas Aéreas (JJ) and possibly Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD) due shortly.
