According to NewsDay, the new managing director will be involved with the turnaround of the national airline through "the provision of strategic direction, co-ordinating the company’s business activities by ensuring it is run in a profitable and professional manner through the development of a customer-centric culture that would restore confidence to customers and stakeholders."
Provision will also be made for the establishment of "a strong corporate governance culture and instilling a performance culture in the organisation", long renowned for its patronage, political interference and nepotism.
With a USD190million debt burden, Air Zimbabwe is slated for restructuring with the finalization of modalities for debt assumption by government currently under consideration.
A strategic partner for the airline is also to be scouted for "between June 2013 and 2014."
It is uncertain as to whether or not a restructured Air Zimbabwe will fair any better than its predecessors given Zimbabwean Tourism minister, Walter Mzembi's, beliefs that national carriers are "not designed to make profits".
