► BURUNDI: New Air Burundi website appears; to resume operations in near future?

Air Burundi logoBurundian national carrier, Air Burundi (8Y), is in the process of launching a re-branded website (though it currently lacks any functionality) with a possible resumption of services to follow writes Rwandan aviation blog, Rwandan-Flyer.

The site is replete with pictures of a photoshopped Airbus A320 as well as mention of introductory fares from Bujumbura to Entebbe, Nairobi and Kigali.

An Air Burundi A320?
An Air Burundi A320? (Air Burundi)
Troubled Air Burundi has been plagued by both operational and managerial problems since it suspended operations 4 years ago when its sole remaining aircraft at the time, a Beech 1900D, reached its maximum flying hours. As the airline could not afford the impending major maintenance check, it was forced to ground itself indefinitely.

Last year it took delivery of two Chinese MA60s (that were never deployed into active service) following which, a new CEO was appointed, Mr Evrard Giswaswa, charged with turning the airline around.

Last week, Mr Giswaswa was arrested in Bujumbura on charges of fraud and negligence regarding a fire that broke out at Bujumbura's central market in January.

In light of the charges brought against him, it is unclear at this present time as to whether or not Mr Giswaswa will remain CEO of Air Burundi, or if Air Burundi will relaunch any time soon.
