The former Mayor of Bujumbura and current CEO of Air Burundi (8Y), Mr. Evrard Giswaswa, was on Monday 11 March arrested on charges of aiding and abetting fraudulent management and for interfering in investigations of a fire that broke out at Bujumbura's central market in late January. Since then, he has been imprisoned at Mpimba Prison in the Burundian capital awaiting trial.

According to Iwacu, Mr Giswaswa had returned home from a meeting in Dakar, Senegal to find he had been served with a summons by the Public Prosecutor. Following 4 hours of interrogation by Burundian ruling party (CNDD-FDD) heavies, Giswaswa was arrested and incarcerated along with Cyprien Horugavye, the director of the Bujumbura Central Market Corporation.
The state's case hinges on there being over 1000 booths at the market, in violation of regulatory procedures, as well as managerial irregularities.
Mr Giswaswa was appointed CEO of Air Burundi in November last year.
