The two contracts worth USD600million (TND900million) were inked during the first meeting of The Tunisia-European Union Economic Advisory Council, held today in Dar Dhiafa, Carthage.

Regarding the Airbus contract, Syphax has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus SAS for three Airbus A320NEO, three Airbus A320CEO with four options. The airline will take delivery of its first A320CEO in 2015, while the new A320NEO aircraft are scheduled to begin delivery in 2019. Additionally, Airbus is to set up a design and production facility specializing in aerospace electronic systems.

Syphax Airlines CEO, Mohamed Frikha said:
"The acquisitions are to be seen in the light of our intended expansion into North America, Asia and Africa, " he added that "each A320 built would create 1'000 jobs or 100 jobs/aircraft."

A similar MoU with Safran S.A was signed in which a centre for aeronautical engineering is to be established, in addition to the purchase of  CFM International's LEAP-1A and CFM56-5B engines for use on Syphax's Airbuses.
These engines are the right choice for our growing airline,” said Mr. Frikha. “CFM56 engines have sterling reputation for reliability and low cost of ownership and we have had very good experience with them. We have every confidence that the LEAP product line will be just as good and are looking forward to introducing these into our fleet."

LEAP engines incorporate advanced aerodynamic design techniques, lighter, more durable materials, and leading-edge environmental technologies, making it a major breakthrough in engine technology.

Mohammed concluded that the two partnerships, set to come into effect in the first half of 2013, are part of Tunisia's long term goal of developing its aeronautical skill base by improving its industrial and technological know-how.

While Syphax does at present only operate a fleet of two Airbus A319s, in the short term it intends to start flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Casablanca, Morocco before expanding internationally.
