Kenya
Airways (KQ) today released its Operations Report for the Third Quarter
of 2012; October to 31st December 2012.
Capacity Available: % Change on Q3 2011
The measure of an airline
flight's passenger carrying capacity against the same period in 2011.
Kenya Airways' market capacity totalled 3.613million seat kilometres
which was 1.1% above last year’s level. The growth during the period was as a result of introducing flights to Eldoret, Kilimanjaro and New Delhi.
- Middle East & Far East (+19.4%): Driven by New Delhi, a new entrant into the region
- North Africa (+2.8%): Growth here was spurred on by the introduction of increased frequencies to Djibouti via Addis Ababa and the use of the larger Embraer 190 fleet as opposed to Embraer 170 used in Q3 2011.
- East Africa (+22.7%): Due to increased deployment of larger aircraft.
- Southern Africa (+6.8%): Due mainly from increase in frequency to Nampula and Harare via Gaborone.
- West Africa (+5.6%): Due to improvements on the Cotonou and Dakar routes.
- Central Africa (+28.6%): Due to the introduction of the Boeing 777-200 on the Kinshasa route as a result of increased demand of cargo and excess baggage.
- Europe (-26.6%): The ongoing EuroZone crisis continues to take its toll. Additionally, capacity rationalization (i.e flying of smaller aircraft) and the suspension of the Rome flight lead to lower capacity.
- Kenya (Domestic) (-1.4%): The drop was as a result of aircraft downgrades on the Nairobi - Mombasa route with the the smaller Embraer E190 replacing the larger B737. Capacity availed to Kisumu grew by 15.4% due to use of the larger Embraer 190 fleet as opposed to Embraer 170 to capture increased traffic during the quarter.
- Cargo Capacity (-10.7%): a proportionate decline in tonnage during the period. The pricing environment remained positive across the network.
Seat Occupancy: % Occupancy for Q3 2012 (% Change compared to Q3 2011)
Essentially, the fullness of your aircraft cabin on all flights on a particular route over the same quarter in 2011.
The total passenger tally, which closed at 991,149, indicates a
growth of 3.6% compared to similar period last year. The resultant
cabin factor at 69.7% was lower than prior year’s 71.7%.
- Middle East, India & Far East: 69.3% (-6.1%): Uplifted passenger traffic at 151,100 showed an improvement of 15.2% compared to same period prior year.
- Africa: 63.6% (-4.5%): Passengers uplifted totalled 516,894 indicating a growth of 2.9% on the back of 10.1% capacity growth.
- Europe: 81.7% (+8.3%) Passenger uplift to Europe at 95,036 was a reduction from last year’s level of 117,527 following the capacity reduction already alluded to.
- Kenya (Domestic): 81.5% (+6.9%): Passengers uplifted within Kenya at 228,119 increased by 10.9%.
