Meanwhile, progress has been made in talks held last week between the European Union and representatives from Libya's aviation sector including Afriqiyah (8U) and Libyan Airlines.

According to sources privy to the talks, the EU will allow Libyan Airlines' Bombardier CRJ 900s to fly back into their airspace from January 15, as both the crew and aircraft are supervised and maintained by Lufthansa (LH). However, for the rest of LN's fleet and for Afriqiyah as a whole, the ban looks to be lifted "at some point in March 2013."

Libyan Airlines' EU-bound flights are presently operated with a leased Tunisian Nouvelair Airbus A320.
