Libyan AirlinesThe Libyan Ministry of Civil Aviation is to embark on two infrastructural improvement projects in the cities of Benghazi and Misrata as Libyan Airlines (LN) are to launch new regional routes following the delivery of their fifth and sixth brand new Airbus A320s in Misrata and Beiba respectively.

Libyan  Airlines are said to be starting (no exact dates confirmed):
  • Benghazi - Rome,
  • Benghazi - Manchester,
  • Benghazi - Casablanca,
  • Tripoli - Madrid,
  • Misrata - Amman (starts January).
To cope with the anticipated upsurge in passenger traffic, both Benghazi and Misrata Airports are to get new passenger terminals following the resumption of work by contractors, South Korea's Nemo Partners.

The Benghazi Benina project is being undertaken, along with a similar terminal at Misrata, at a combined estimated cost of USD48million (LYD60million) and is expected to take 12-18 months to complete.

Despite its price tag, the new terminal at Benghazi is only expected to serve as a temporary structure, meaning that it could be superseded should the bigger pre-existing terminal expansion project be resurrected. Likewise, the Misrata new terminal is also being described as temporary, and comes in the midst of contractual difficulties on other projects at the airport described as “extremely complicated”.
The Libyan side need these new passenger terminals and want to make headway as soon as possible”, explained Kim Kyunghan, a member of the Korean embassy in Tripoli. “That’s why they are proceeding with these temporary terminals now.
