► NIGERIA: Aero Contractors gets two extra 737-400s as Parliament launches safety inquest.

Nigeria's second largest domestic airline, Aero Contractors (AJ), has acquired two additional Boeing 737-400 aircraft, bringing its total fleet to 12, the company's publicists said in a statement Monday.

One of the aircraft (MSN: 29201 | N605SC) is said to be a GECAS lease, whilst the other's origin is uncertain.
Aero adheres strictly to the maintenance schedule for aircraft as prescribed by the manufacturers and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority {NCAA}. We will not relent in our efforts to offer the most satisfying flying experience for passengers every time they fly with us,'' the statement said.

Aero said the newly-acquired B737-400, 144-seater aircraft are equipped with the latest navigation equipment with lower fuel burn and increased reliability, making the aircraft more efficient, environmentally friendly and easier to maintain.

The announcement comes after the Nigerian House of Representatives last week mandated its committee on aviation to investigate Aero Contractors over the frequent engine problems associated with their aircraft.
'Rep. Robinson Uwak, moving a motion of urgent national importance, said it has been observed that some of the flights of the airline have been cancelled due to engine problems. The lawmaker said it is necessary to investigate the matter so as to prevent another air disaster. '

Aero Contractors of Nigeria was formed in 1959 as a wholly owned by Schreiner Airways B.V of the Netherlands. It became a company with an initial 40% Nigerian holding in 1973 which subsequently increased to 60% in 1976. As such, the airline is one of four major commercial airlines in Nigeria and the oldest among them.
