Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and a Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the Governments of Niger and Turkey in May, the Nigerien ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport today announced that Turkish Airlines is to start flights between Turkey, Niger and Burkina Faso effective mid December.

The 3x weekly Boeing 737-900ER service will launch 15 December 2012 and will operate via Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on the return sector, according to an official statement issued here.

Turkish Airlines rapid expansion into Africa comes as part of Turkey's move to develop and enhance bilateral ties with African countries by investing in projects that concern humanitarian aid, public education, social welfare and infrastructure. In line with this policy, Turkey has increased the number of its embassies in Africa to 34 with new diplomatic missions being opened in Niger, Namibia, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Chad and Guinea.
