► GAMBIA: Cosmo Airlines to give Gambia Bird, Vueling competition on Barcelona route.

Cosmo AirlinesAn Airbus A320 (MSN 528 | LY-COM) belonging to Spanish charter airline Cosmo Airlines, on Saturday night, landed in Banjul from Barcelona, Spain, signaling its resumption of service to the Gambian capital, suspended several years ago.


According to the Gambian press, Cosmo's initial once weekly Saturday flight will help fill the void left by fellow Spanish carrier Spanair (JK), who ceased operations in January of this year.

"Ramon Ferre, managing director of the Cosmo Airline, expressed his delight at the resumption of flights to destination Gambia after so many years. He told the gathering that his institution felt there was a gap between Banjul and Barcelona that needed to be filled, which they are now filling because of the trust they have in destination Gambia.

Ferre also thanked the government of The Gambia for the support and facilities offered them, which made it possible for them to resume flights to the country. He explained that the 180-capacity airbus is scheduled to arrive Banjul every Saturday. He promised that the frequency of the flights will increase in future, so long as the market begins to grow up again as expected."

Cosmo's entry into the Spain - Gambia market comes as Gambia Bird (3G), who launched operations yesterday following a 3 week delay, have slated Barcelona as a destination, with once weekly flights set to start in the future.
