● ETHIOPIA: National Airways, Kenya Aeronautical College to open new aviation college.

National Airways logoEthiopia's National Airways (7N), in conjunction with Nairobi-based Kenya Aeronautical College (KAC), are to open a centre for the training of aviation personnel in Addis Ababa, to cater for the shortage of skilled manpower currently facing Ethiopia's aerospace and aviation sectors.

No specific date has been set for the school's launch.

Accreditations-wise, it is understood that the college is in the process of negotiating an affiliation with an as yet unknown Canadian university willing to run joint aviation programs, and with renowned universities such as Florida's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the Chinese Shenyang Aerospace University (SAU).

Initially, the college intends to offer basic training for people who wish to become ticket sales officers, travel agents and cabin crew. Thereafter, the intention is to diversify into more sophisticated degree-level certifications and qualifications.

Speaking to Ethiopia's Capital press, Abera Lemmi, the General Manager of National Airways, said:
"In the near future, we will have a degree level program in aviation science (a science dealing with aircraft operation and support systems which include aircraft maintenance, air traffic control and airport and airline management) with international accreditation. We will be certified by the Canadians,” he said.   “Currently negotiations are underway with universities involved in aviation to run joint programs here,” he stated.
